Binding comes loose, its there to protect the instrument from damage, sometimes an impact will break it, sometimes the weather conditions will cause an issue
This guitar, the binding has come loose, it also has lost a small section of the binding, this walk through is about how to make a matching piece for the missing area.
Time to repair approx 2 hrs over 3 days (glue drying times)
The loose piece continues down around the input jack
Like so, just cut a small piece out to be able to measure and assess.
Start by scraping any glue or wood of the binding.
Measuring the binding, it comes up to .85mm (black and white).
Scraping the black binding away
Re-measure with the black binding gone and we have white binding 0.51mm thick.
Height of the binding is 1.76mm.
I sketch all this out onto my worksheet for reference later.
Nice Martin guitar, has taken a small impact.
To stop the further breakdown of the binding, the owner has fitted some cellutape to hold it together, this is good and bad, good it stops further damage to the binding, bad the glue on the tape eats into the paintwork
Also a section is missing
To start the repair I remove some of the original binding
A draw of binding strips of varying thicknesses / heights and colours.
