Truss rods break, it happens to the best of us, many ways to repair exist, I am showing in this tute my preferred method.
In this instance customer has adjusted the truss rod a little too much and it snapped, it also in my opinion has a design flaw, so we will modify the new truss rod to eliminate this situation.
Time to repair approx 6 hrs over 5 days (glue drying times)
We heat and remove the fretboard.
The truss rod is embedded into the neck, a strip of maple has been installed to seat it, so with a chisel we remove that strip of maple.
Once the strip of maple has been removed, we can lift the broken truss rod out.
Some irony, a warning in the truss rod recess
The manufacturer installed some thin steel bars, as these are no longer keeping the neck flat and straight, we will retrofit some carbon fibre rods in.
Again like so
Redesigning the new truss rod, we are going to go with a barrel nut like those used on fender guitars.
Using original nuts we fabricate a new rod
Nice Bass guitar, with a broken truss rod, the broken piece is in the red circle.
Up close under the nut, you can see some left over thread but no means of adjustment.
Like so.
Weld the fender style nut to the other end and lathe it smooth.
