"How To" Carbon Fibre Reinforce Neck

Once the board is removed, we can setup  for fitting the carbon fibre rods.
The width of the rod I buy is 5.3mm
The height is 6.57mm
I want the top of the rod half way between the nut and first fret
The opposite end, just shy of the neck join
With a Black texta I mark my machine end points
And at the nut end.
The router bit im using is 5.2mm, so the carbon fibre rod will be a light press fit.
We need access to the neck under the fretboard, you can either remove and refit the fretboard or you can do a board replacement at the same time.

I am doing a board replacement, so first step for me is to remove frets.
I am going to machine the fretboard away, which will also allow me to do a neck reset on it at the same time.

I have laid two carbon fibre rod blanks onto the neck for layout.
Starting at our reference point at the nut end, we use an overhead router to cut our channel, I cut the channel straight with the neck itself.
Sometimes necks when strung up will change their shape, typically most non straight grained necks will develop a twist. Any successfull repair requires us to replicate the playing position, or add something to the neck to provide more strength.

This guitar with no string tension applied, is perfectly straight, under tension it twists, so we are going to insert two carbon fibre rods into the neck to add structural strength


Time to repair approx 5 hrs over 4 days (wood relax/stabilizing times)
