In the past a zero fret was viewed as part of making a cheap guitar, manufacturer's did not have to make a nut, all they had to do was fit an additional fret instead, over the years the simplicity of the zero fret has made it more popular.
This Taylor the owner wants a zero fret, to achieve this, we modify the original nut to accept a fret.
Time to manufacture 1hr
And file the existing nut slots so they are lower than needed
We need to know height of existing frets
Hard to see in photo, but 43 thou high.
Remove strings and bridge pins
The radius of the board is 14 inch
Apply some masking tape up to the edge of the existing nut.
This file has a cutting edge on just one side, the other edges are smooth and flat
Using my fingerboard as the guide, file a shelf into the existing nut.
Clean and tidy bone nut already fitted.
If the nut is broken, use attached link to manufacture a new one.
I get a nut file for each gauge string.
Pushing the string down between the second and third fret, I want my string to bottom out on the first fret. File as required to achieve this.
Approx 3mm in depth.
