Hide Glue was widely used in the turn of the century for furniture and Musical Instrument manufacture.
It is made from boiling the connective tissue of animals, skins, bones, tendons, and other tissues, to a gelatinous mix, commercially we can buy it in a dried form.
Time to prepare - one day
Using a small glass jar, we mix a one week glue requirements, the solution has a working lifespan of about 7 days before it needs to be discarded.
With 20 grams of water.
You also need a simmer pot, baby bottle warmer will do.
Put the fresh mix into the water to heat.
After 3 hrs its mixed, I will let it sit overnight before use
The next day before I use it, is a gel like mix
Reheat for about 2 hrs until the solution goes runny again.
This is a test to show how fast it sets
This 50's Gibson neck is glued on with Hide glue, it needs to come off for a neck reset.
Hide glue is purchased in dried pellet form.
I mix 20 grams of dried hide glue
I drop a small blob of hide glue onto a flat surface.
