Thanks to modern technology we can do all this prep work now on computer, you can if you want do it by hand, lay all the lines out ""exactly"", cut the starting string slots perfectly square and exact distance and so forth.
Okay so we are loading a bone blank into the cnc cutter
So heres a rough shaped blank ready to go, the string posiitons are perfect, the top radius profile is perfect the notches on the end of the radius are exactly 42mm apart
With the old nut removed you need to get the base area flat and neat, you also need to make sure its square to the fretboard, Im just using a file to achieve this
We now have a flat base, so time to start fitting the bone blank
First we must thin the blank to the width of the nut slot
Keep going back and forth until the nut width matches exactly the nut slot
Once it fits width wise, check the side and base for flattness, you should see a perfect match up, if its out then you need to refile the nut slot until it is flat and square
