Nitro cracks and lifts, in doing so it can become rather un-attractive.
The nitro has cracked badly on this one, so much so the wood is exposed to the elements, to repair this includes the replacement of the waterslide decal. This walk through is replacing said decal.
Time to repair approx 3 hrs over 14 days (Paint drying times)
Measure the existing logo for reference
We flat sand until all the checked nitro is gone, it also as you can see removed the decal.
After sanding back to a flat raw surface, we stabilize the colour on the headstock with a black dye.
Allow the dye to dry for one day
Shellac the surface to seal the finish and wood.
After 24hrs dry time we scuff for a second coat of shellac
Second coat of shellac
Scuff to prepare for new paint
The checking (name given for broken nitro) is severe and rather un-attractive
Remove all hardware.
220 grit is one of the best grades of paper for taking a finish back to wood.
Using an airbrush, I apply 3-6 coats of lacquer over a 3hr period
