The ultimate goal of any repair, is to go "what repair".

Note - This takes time, do not expect your first repair to be perfect, your goal is for it to be functional, with repetition your skill set gets better.

After painting we have a nice finished surface.

Even knowing where the punched hole was, you would struggle to find any evidence externally of iots existance.
Raw sanded repaired area, you can still see the crack remnants. This was from the large crushed area.
Another trick, is to use a small razor blade and draw some grain lines with the tip of the blade over the cross grain cracks

Using shellac and some surface dust we then pack and smooth the crack, the surface dust fills the voids made by the razor blade and makes it appear to be grain lines, it also seals the surface for any finish work.
We then sand smooth the top damaged area (220 grit).
