This Oboe came in for a new tenon cork and a service
When removing the keys we came across this unusual epoxy repaired tone hole
Discussion with the owner allowed us to proceed in making a new tone hole
Milling machine and holding jig for the oboe
The old tone hole is drilled out to the correct manufacturers size
We then machine the bulk of the tone hole away with a flat end mill
A piece of ebony is turned up to the correct dimensions of the end mill and a 20 degree taper is cut on the face
Up close of the machined hole
Up close of the replacement tone hole on test fit
The tone hole is flat sanded on a granit block to height
And glued in place, I also glued the tenon cork on at the same time hence the white rag
Faced away until smooth tone hole and exact height of manufacturers original tone hole
After 24hrs dry time, we hand face the tone hole with this facing tool
Finished tone hole and final ream to size
Oboe Tone hole Replacement
We complete the service and assemble the keys back on with a new cork pad on the G# key
Job finished
