Rough cut in half
Couple of bandsaws, whilst it wont give a perfect cut, it will definetly split the bassoon in half
View side 2
For some reason Bassoonists are intrigued with what lies within the inside of the Boot section of their Bassoon

Here I hope to show whats actually there

An old wooden boot joint side 1

Bassoon Boot Joint

Washed and cleaned
First noteable thing internally, is that the wing joint reciever socket is metal lined, this is a pretty common feature, the long joint side is not

The reciever socket is epoxied in place
At the opposite end is the reciever section for the Bassoons U joint

The body is notched around the outer edge for the fitting and the bore is untouched on both sides
Typically the wing joint side of the Bassoon is lined with rubber or an epoxy, this is a very consistent feature fitted in quality bassoons

This particular Bassoon has a rubber liner, you can see how the years of exposure have given it a greenish tinge to the exposed bore
Down through the centre spine of the instrument is a series of small holes that a push rod sits in, the amount of holes comes down to the complexity of the instrument and its scale, typically 4 holes is normal, this one only has 3

This allows a person to have the contact keys in a comfortable /  ergonomic position for their hand but operate a key on the opposite side of the instrument
Last photo, the taper of the bore is typically 0.8 degrees, on both sides, this one looks a little bit hour shaped but this is due to my inability to cut a straight line through the instrument
You may have heard of this but never seen it.

This is Basson Wood rot, the lower section of the bassoon has become discoloured as the wood starts to rot (Red Circle) the Green arrow points to a section of wood that is compleltey rotted away

Hopefully your bassoon does not need a Graft to rectify this issue, simply solved by cleaning your Bassoon correctly.
