Before I start any physical repair, I like to get my colours correct, so I premix them before job commencement and do test samples.
This instrument had been repaired before we did the job, so we have to work within the confines of their work as well.
We cut maple blanks to orientate the grain with the Bassoon
The blank of maple is turned and then threaded to suit the post
We then mount the Bassoon under a milling machine (Large drill)
With an end mill we removed all the damaged wood
Clean round hole
Up close of the new hole and the previous repair it had
We glue in our new maple insert and post and allow to dry
The whole area is prepared for new paint
Local stain from start (1st picture) carried out on the raw exposed maple
A little bit of colour to camouflage the previous persons repair
Distance view of the fresh new coloured area
Assembled with new pad and cleaned
Unfortunatley someone else repaired this previous to us and it failed on them, you will note a saxophone pad with a resonator was used in the key as well.
